Languages on banknotes of multinational states on the example of Czechoslovakia and the Soviet Union

Abstract Along with portraits of historical figures, images relating to the culture and history a particular nation, presence (or absence) languages on banknotes is also an element symbolic politics part manifestation language policy state. In this paper, are seen as linguistic landscape, landscape – reflection policy, its peculiar public expression. This paper analyses way in which text displayed multilingual constructs reproduces hierarchies, reflecting relative status within two multi-ethnic states: Czechoslovak Republic Soviet Union.
